Challenge:
The data in the NetProspex contact database system – email, phone and address data – is crowd-sourced and therefore must be validated. NetProspex is constantly looking for new and cost-effective methods for data verification in addition to sophisticated algorithms already in place. To ensure faster, higher-quality results, NetProspex thoroughly evaluated solutions for adding Web-based sources to its validation efforts. The company considered free open source Web data extraction software and creating its own crawling tool; both options had substantial drawbacks.
Solution:
NetProspex initially investigated the possibility of developing in-house Web data crawling and extraction technology, but soon realized that building such a solution from scratch would be time-consuming and resource-intensive. The company then examined several open-source crawling tools. They found, however, that even open-source crawling software would require a great deal of legwork and customization in order to work properly. NetProspex instead focused its efforts on identifying the types of information it needed to properly validate its contact records and how it could integrate such a validation mechanism into the CleneStep system. NetProspex then turned to the leader in Web data collection and monitoring – Connotate – for additional validation. With specific requirements for the types of data to collect, NetProspex only needed to subscribe to two active “intelligent Agents” which it created with the help of Connotate as a proof-of-concept.
